The Church Block was the first wine produced by Wirra Wirra’s founder Greg Trott back in 1972 – named after one of the original vineyards that runs alongside a small church built in the 1850s.

These guys have been a label to keep an eye on in recent years, producing some seriously smart reds and extremely wallet-friendly prices. That might have something to do with Wirra Wirra’s winemaker being the super talented, ex-Penfolds winemaker Emma Wood.

Aged 12 months in oak this McLaren Vale red is packing plenty of value. Scoring 91/100 with The Real Review’s Stuart Knox who said “Ripe and powerful purple berry fruits fill the mouth…A lot of value here.”

Meanwhile James Suckling scored it 92/100 and said “Dark-fruited aromas of blackberries, dark chocolate, spices and mulberries. The palate is full-bodied with supple tannis and balanced acidity, giving flavors of blood plums, cedar and coffeebeans. Nicely balanced, with an aromatic lift.”

Pair with red meats and hearty pastas and drink now to 10 years from vintage.
