There’s nobody else in NZ more qualified (literally) to find Spanish gems than Master of Wine Steve Bennett. As another MW Bob Campbell puts it – “Steve has built his reputation on the quality of his imports.”
And if there’s one thing he is absolutely bonkers about it’s Rioja – you’ll often catch him grumbling about how Kiwis ought to drink more Rioja and less Pinot Noir! Well he might convert a few with this one. He’s absolutely hit the nail on the head discovering this incredible value organic Rioja called Azabache.
This is an organic Rioja blend of 60% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 20% Graciano.
New Zealand based Master of Wine Paul Tudor scored it 95/100 and claimed it as his “Wine of the Year, because of how much it delivers for the price.”
Paul said “Good colour, a touch of vanilla and toast on the nose, cedary fruit under that, some secondary characters dark chocolate, vinosity. Juicy, primary fruit in the mouth, dark fruits, but then great texture, firm finish/structure. If anything, this wine needs a little more time to come together. This is a serious wine at a ridiculous price. Tasted late in 2025, this was my Wine of the Year, because of how much it delivers for the price. Typically, I am blown away by some obscure appellation or grape variety, or maybe it is an old wine that I had expected would be dead. But this latest vintage of Azabache is incredibly impressive, expressive and well put together.”
Pair this Spanish beauty with roasted and grilled red meats, especially lamb.
