Greywacke (yes, it’s pronounced grey-wacky) is the family wine label of the Judds. You’ll find Greywacke HQ in Omaka, Marlborough producing world class Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and other styles from organically farmed sites.
Head of the family is Kevin Judd – an absolute winemaking legend in his own right and pretty handy with a camera too! Kevin has pursued a parallel career as a photographer and has published several books including “The Landscape of New Zealand Wine”, “The Colour of Wine” and (our favourite) “Wine Dogs New Zealand”.
Born in England and raised in Aussie, Judd moved to NZ in 1983 and would later become the founding winemaker of Cloudy Bay and go on to produce the first 25 vintages.
“Keep it simple and hands-on” – that’s the Greywacke way of thinking. Trust us, the wines are anything but simple! Best known for their world class Sauvignon Blanc but increasingly the spotlight is on Pinot Noir in this part of the wine world. And Greywacke Pinot Noir from Marlborough is a top class example.
Scoring a huge 95/100 with Cam Douglas MS who said “Fabulous bouquet with complexity and depth, purity of fruit and a sense of site, winemaking style and intrigue. Aromas and flavours of spiced blackcurrant and dark cherry, hay and dried herb, stone and barrel smoke and violet. Dry, a firm texture with polished tannins and medium+ acid line. As the wine opens out in glass the core flavours and texture show more intensity and complexity, a wine that will continue to age and develop. Best drinking from 2027 through 2037.”
It also got a 93/100 & Top Rank Award from Master of Wine Stephen Wong for The Real Review, he said “Complex, with myriad small berries, dried herb, woodsmoke, cinnamon and some darker notes of dried currants.”
Drink this now or cellar until 12-15 years from vintage.
