In the 1990s Greg and Sue White gave up the rat race and corporate lifestyle, bought themselves a 48-foot yacht and started sailing around the pacific (as you do!). On board was their baby daughter Samantha who’d spend the first six months of her life at sea!
Taking shelter from the Pacific hurricane season they ended up in the Marlborough Sounds (maybe the on board wine supplies were running a bit low too?). They instantly fell in the love with the place and decided they’d put down roots and start a winery (as you do!). In 1994, Whitehaven was formed with the labels featuring an anchor symbol – a reminder of the importance of family, following your dreams, and the crazy things that can happen when you travel around the world in a 48-foot yacht!
In 2007 Greg sadly passed away but Sue continues to head the family business along with daughter Samantha, the little girl all grown up that spent her first six months on a Pacific adventure at sea!
This is the 2024 vintage of Whitehaven Chardonnay that scored 94/100 with NZ critic Sam Kim. Sam said “Complex and stylish, the wine exhibits aromas of apricot, rock melon, vanilla, and roasted hazelnut, with a hint of brioche. It’s wonderfully weighted and flowing in the mouth, delivering creamy texture backed by finely pitched acidity”
A great wine to chill down and enjoy with or without a feed – but if you do want the ideal food and wine match the guys at Whitehaven reckon this is a goer with Mediterranean food, creamy mushroom pasta, poultry dishes and veal.
