The bottle of French red every wine merchant, retailer, importer, distributor and (most importantly!) wine drinker on the planet has been scrambling to get a hold of! This is Chevalier Delaude 2022 and it’s listed in the “The World’s 20 Best Wines Under $20” according to the judges at the world’s biggest and most influential wine show on the planet – the Decanter World Wine Awards 2024 in London.
BUT (and this is your heads up!) there’s only a tiny shipment for the NZ market and it’s now all spoken for – so you’ll need to grab yourself a case (or three) before it’s gone.
Before we crack into what the wine is and what it’s all about, let’s just really highlight how bloody good this award is. Chevalier Delaude joined 18,142 other wines from 57 countries around the world – they’re put to the test and then awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze – the rest are shown the door!
To be selected in the new “Top Value Gold” category all gold medal wines that cost less than 15 pounds or about USD$20 were retested. As DWWA co-chair Beth Willard puts it – “We don’t all have £50 to spend on a bottle of wine every night…What we’re looking for in the Value category are wines which are absolutely delicious, have great character and identity that when they see that Decanter Gold medal Value sticker on the bottle, the consumers will know that’s a great bottle of wine.”
Co-Chair Michael Hill Smith AM MW said “We make absolutely sure that we’re really selecting the top wines and then giving them a little nudge so that they really are recognised as Value under £15.”
So from 18,143 wines down to 643 Gold medal wines then down to 93 “Top Value Gold” winners…and THEN the Top Value Gold winners are put to the test yet again to be whittled down to “The World’s 20 Best Wines Under $20”.
The DWWA judges said “Succulent and concentrated with flawless blackberry fruit melded with black pepper and dried herbs. The lush richness is tempered by silky smooth tannins and clearly defined structure.”
From the Languedoc region in southern France – this is an area with a reputation for outstanding value and it’s delivered yet again! A blend of Syrah (60%), Grenache (30%) and Mourvedre (10%). If you’re looking to pair it with a feed the guys at Sarl Du Grand Bourry say quite simply – “A real personality, to be married with juicy red meat”.
