Penfolds launched their Bin 2 blend back in the 60s, a time when Aussies were slurping their wines in mini-skirts and psychedelic tie-die shirts and they called Shiraz “Hermitage” and Mourvedre “Mataro”. Crazy times!
Much like the fashion the Bin 2 series was ditched in the 70s as a white wine boom hit the Aussie wine market. These days Aussie winemakers love using Mataro (also called Mourvedre or Monastrell) for its blending qualities, and Penfolds Bin 2 is going strong over half a century since its debut.
Spicy, savoury Mataro (about 15%) blended with plush, rich Shiraz from some of Penfolds best vineyards in the Barossa, McLaren Vale and Padthaway regions. Peter Gago, chief wine dude at Penfolds, sums this one up nicely “All-fruit, no oak to speak of…soft, rounded tannins, plush and ripe“. If you’re in to cellaring try tucking this away for 5-6 years.
