“One of Australia’s best rosés, year in, year out.” – James Halliday
That’s high praise coming from a high place – Halliday is undoubtedly Australia’s most followed wine critic. And this latest 2023 didn’t disappoint with not one but TWO Trophies for best Rosé at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show and Barossa Wine Show respectively!
We’ve guzzled (or is that gobbled?) a bottle or two recently and can confirm – this is bloody delish! It’s pale pink in colour, light and crisp with summer fruit flavours and a dry finish. A real class act and although it’s from the Barossa this has the look, feel and taste of a Provence style Rose.
This latest 2024 is a thing of beauty….
95/100 (James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“This much-loved Turkey Flat Rosé just delivers the goods year in, year out. Pale salmon pink with just a hint of copper and aromas of redcurrant, red apple and raspberry with a scatter of dried herbs, soft spice, pressed purple flowers, dried citrus rind and apple turnover. Dry, savoury and long of flavour, there’s just the right amount of acid crunch and texture, finishing stony and dangerously moreish. Me gusta.”
92/100, Top Rank Award & Top Value Award (Ralph Kyte-Powell, The Real Review)
“Very pale rose-gold in appearance, this has a delicate blush to it that is very inviting. It’s perfumed on the nose, a mélange of floral and herbal scents with suggestions of pomegranate and strawberry. That appealing delicacy of character continues down the palate, but it has intensity too, signing off with a lingering, crisp aftertaste. A lovely pink wine to sip as the weather warms up……or at any other time for that matter.”
Turkey Flat. Gobble gobble. So what’s with the name? Well the early settlers in the area in the 1840s noticed a large native bird often in the area on the rich flats at the lower end of the Tanunda Creek. Bird lovers will tell you it wasn’t a turkey, it was actually an Ardeotis australis, but for the sake of a good story let’s stick with turkey!
The Schulz family have been running the Turkey Flat vineyards since the 1860s and as a side hussle at the time also had a thriving family butcher business! It was meant to be!
