Mandoleto is the almond tree that grows alongside the vines on the steep hillsides this vineyard sits on.
So when we read one critic said “dark berry, game, clove and toasted almond” and another said it had “nutty aromas” we did wonder if a few cheeky nuts ended up in the barrel! Don’t worry, this wine contains no traces of nuts but does contain plenty of juicy cherry and dark berry fruit flavours with a delicious savouriness that remind us of sucking of a dark liquorice lolly!
The grape is Nero D’Avola and it’s the most planted variety on the island of Sicily, off the coast of mainland Italy. This is a medium bodied, rich, fruity style red that you’ll happily glug with or without food, if you do want to bust it out at the dinner table try it with grilled meats, antipasto and cheeses.
