Maybe it’s because they’re a superstitious bunch. Maybe they’re just showing some gratitude. Maybe it’s just because they love a smooch.

In 1952 local winegrower Don Peppe opened the gates to his estate, grabbed the first bunch of grapes and kissed ’em. It’s a tradition the Farnese wine crew still follow to this day (kissing the grapes, not each other) – they’ve even named one of their labels after it!

Meaning ‘first’ in Italian – this red from southern Italy really is primo! A blend of Sangiovese, Tuscany’s favourite grape, and Merlot. Medium bodied, soft, smooth and dangerously drinkable red.

Pronouncing Italian wine names can be a bit of a mouthful, but don’t let it put you off!

Farnese (pronounced far – nay – see) is the producer
Primo (pronounced pree-mo) is the name of the label
Sangiovese (pronounced san-joh-vay-say) is the grape (along with Merlot)
    Puglia is the region
IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is the second level of a four tier Italian wine classification system (DOCG, DOC, IGP/IGT and finally Vino da Tavola, table wine or as we call it…plonk for plonkers!)
    The Lowdown: 12.5% alc / 750ml / Screwcap
