Surrounded by the snowy capped Alps the wine region of Piedmont in northern Italy looks a little like something from The Sound of Music! This is the home of some of Italy’s best fuller bodied red wines.
The wine most famous from this part of the wine world is Barolo, produced from the Nebbiolo grape, which is a massively tannic, big, rich red that requires a minimum of three years aging according to strict Italian wine laws. Barolo ain’t cheap – but boy it’s worth it! Think of it as a necessity on any true wine lover’s must-try-before-you-die list.
This is a wine bragging TWO 95 point scores from local critics…
95/100 & Top Rank Award (Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review)
“Surprisingly accessible with classic tar and roses flavours together with other floral and savoury/hedgerow characters. Firmly structured but great with food. High energy wine with obvious cellaring potential.”
95/100 (Sam Kim)
“Immensely complex and seductive, the wine shows dark berry, dried porcini, fine leather and cedar characters on the nose. The palate delivers excellent weight and concentration, wonderfully complemented by refined texture and layers of grainy tannins. Superbly structured and harmonious with a prolonged sturdy finish. At its best: now to 2033.”
This is a wine that is begging to be paired with a rich, red meat dish. Here’s our tip – impress the other half and whip up an Italian Ragù dish and pair this wine with it. Mama mia, what a match!
