These guys only release their sleek looking Elephant Hill Reserve Syrah when the quality hits the mark. When they say that, they mean it. These guys set the bar pretty high when it comes to quality. That might be something to do with their German owners, Roger and Reydan Weiss, that spare no expense in running this state of the art winery located on the stunning Te Awanga coastline, and boasts one of the finest winery restaurants in NZ!
They’re pretty picky about when they do or don’t release anything under their Reserve label, in their own words “This wine is an expression of all our vineyards: Sea, Earth and Stone. The outstanding 2019 Vintages, combined with low yielding vines, handpicked fruit and extended maturation in high-quality French oak has produced a wine showing elegance and perfume with great flavour conentration, and find structure. “
Produced using grapes from their Gimblett Gravels vineyard, aged for 22 months in oak, this is a dense, concentrated Syrah with serious cellaring potential.
Scoring 95/100 with wine critic Sam Kim who said “Richly fruited and fragrant, the bouquet shows blackberry, clove, star anise, cured meat, and roasted nut aromas. The palate delivers excellent weight and plump mouthfeel, splendidly structured by plush texture and chalky tannins, making it sturdy and robust with a persistent, delectable finish. At its best: now to 2032”
