From a teeny tiny 5.5 hectare site in Central Otago and owned by hometown Kiwi girl Philippa (she grew up on an Otago farm) and her French hubby Yannick.
Everything about Domaine Rewa is Aotearoa with a French twist – from the name (Rewa is Philippa’s Granny, and Rewarewa is the native New Zealand tree you’ll see on the label) to the style of wine.
Philippa and Yannick get a local Otago winemaking legend Peter Bartle to make this one. He’s the man behind some seriously good wine from the Central Otago region – we’re talking Wooing Tree, Bald Hills, Lowburn Ferry, Domain Road, Grasshopper Rock, Mt Pisa and more!
This is their latest 2019 release and made in a medium dry style with subtle sweetness and a lower alcohol at just 11.5%.
Scoring 92/100 with Master of Wine Bob Campbell who said “Fantastic bouquet of mandarin and lime flower, citrus and fresh rose apple scents. A distinctive lees and floral quality add depth and enticement. An off-dry wine touches the palate first with a lime and apple flavours hit. Next, flavours of mineral and a sift white spice quality show then a return to the mandarin and lime flower ideas. Delicious with a silky-cream texture, a contrasting backbone of acidity. Lengthy and well made with best drinking from 2025 through 2035.”
Fully BioGro certified, Philippa and co have planted over 100 olive trees on site while bees and chickens play the part of bringing biodiversity to the vineyard. Chill this down and enjoy as a pre-dinner tipple (at a little over 10% it also makes a great lunchtime wine) or pair with spicy Asian cuisine like Thai or Chinese, roast pork or fish and seafood dishes.
