Champagne Deutz are the French Champagne house who struck a historical deal with Montana wines back in the 1980s and changed the landscape of wine making (and bubbles especially!) here in New Zealand forever.
They provided winemaking know-how (and financed bringing over some whizz bang pieces of winemaking kit!) to Montana’s winemaking team and helped to produce high quality New Zealand fizz from Marlborough grapes, all with a slight French accent.
When the first Deutz Marlborough Cuvee was produced Champagne Deutz sent over their main man (“chef de cave“) who marked the occasion with the noble and slightly dangerous act of sabrage – slicing the top off a bottle of Champagne using a sword!
Champagne Deutz are one of Champagne’s most famous houses and were founded in 1838 by founded two brothers William and Pierre Deutz. These days they’re under the ownership of another Champagne giant Louis Roederer, although Champagne Deutz do operate independently.
