d’Arenberg founder Joseph Osborn was a keen racehorse owner and Footbolt was his pride and joy. And clearly helped put a coin or two in his back pocket given the fact he sold his horses to buy the d’Arenberg property in 1912.
From a cracking 2021 McLaren Vale vintage – the d’Arenberg crew said “Yields were down significantly, the lowest in memory, however, quality is exceptional. Some of the best wines seen for years. Great colour, fruit characters, flavours and length.”
The fruit was basket pressed (an expensive, labour intensive winery tool used to produce high quality fruit!) and aged for 12-18 months in seasoned French oak – it’s a style the d’Arenberg crew call a “Classic McLaren Vale Shiraz, rich, ripe red berry fruits and great fruit length.”
It scored 92/100 & Top Value Award with The Real Review’s Stuart Knox who said “Dark and plush berry fruits sit at the core, and there’s many layers of character…Its weight and power is well balanced…A lot of wine at the price.”
Master of Wine Stephen Wong scored it 90/100 and said “A vibrantly fruity, spicy and aromatic expression…Mid-weight and sustained, this is quite attractive despite its youth and is likely best enjoyed now for its exuberant flavours.”
This McLaren Vale number will be hot to trot up to 8-9 years from vintage.
