The 32nd release of one of NZ’s most famous red wines is here! It was 120 years ago that Te Mata planted Cabernet vines in the Havelock Hills in Hawke’s Bay, today Coleraine is widely thought of as NZ’s finest red wine.

The 2016 vintage saw a smaller than usual crop which did help to produce a wine of high concentration, lively acid and dark colour. While the smaller crop did produce powerful concentration and finesse, it also put a squeeze on global allocations for this massively sought after wine, which Decanter magazine declared last year as “New Zealand’s First Growth”, a phrase in reference to the top wines of Bordeaux based on reputation and price.

It didn’t take long for the wine to nail its first 5 Star review. Michael Cooper MW gave it full marks in his column in the NZ Listener and said “Still a baby, this classy Cabernet/Merlot demands cellaring as you’d expect. The bouquet is fragrant and complex; the palate is vigorous (revealing “bright fruit characters”) with substantial body, strong blackcurrant, plum, spice and nut flavours, firm, ripe tannins and a seamless, lasting finish. Best drinking 2023+.”

If you’re a Coleraine collector it’s another must have! If Coleraine is yet to sit in your cellar – what a way to start, especially with this mega sized magnum. And remember, larger format bottles tend to show better potential in the cellar too.

Named after the town in Northern Ireland where Te Mata Estate owner John Buck’s grandfather was born and first produced in 1982. This famous Bordeaux style red is presented in individually wrapped in Coleraine branded, vintage dated tissue and presented in swanky Coleraine branded wooden wine box – it’ll comfortably sit in your cellar for 25+ years.
