Out of stock
We’ve been hunting. Pinot hunting. We’ve been on the lookout for the best value Pinot we could lay our mits on. We’ve worked and slurped our way through a tonne of Pinots (it’s a tough job) from Central Otago, Marlborough, Martinborough and Hawke’s Bay.
There were some big name producers with heavy hitting labels, Gold medal winners, Five Star award winners, the lot. The wine that came out on top ticked none of those boxes!
Otiake Estate Central Otago Pinot Noir 2014. It’s pronounced o-tee-ah-key (it means lookout point). No awards. No reviews. No accolades. It’s never been submitted into any wine shows. It’s got a debatably ugly label but boy oh boy does the wine behind this label seriously over deliver for a snip under twenty bucks. In fact, we can’t remember a sub $20 Central Otago Pinot this good in a long time.
Otiake Estate is owned by an NZ businessman who got his hands on some quality Pinot grapes from the Alexandra sub region of Central Otago and then set about asking one of the region’s top winemakers, Anthony Wurch, to make his wine. Wurch is a Frenchman now settled in Otago and he’s the guy behind the award winning wines from Tarras The Canyon, Kuru Kuru and previously spent a bit of time with the crew at Peregrine.
Aged for 15 months in French oak (what else) the result is wonderfully rich, savoury Pinot with supple tannins and heaps of dark fruit flavours – a glass of deliciousness from start to finish! This wine has got the added bonus of a few years bottle age behind it and it has really started to hit its straps, we reckon this could cellar comfortably for a few more years yet though.
The owner of Otiake has been in no hurry to sell his wine, instead supplying a few local restaurants and no doubt sharing it with friends and family! But with some new vintages on the way he’s decided to shift a bit of stock along to make room.
We could waffle on all day about how bloody good this wine but the simple fact is this – it blows away everything else you’ll come across for the money! If you don’t agree, send it back and well refund your money and finish the bottle for you!
