Forget the GC bro, it’s all about the GCC. That’s the Gisborne Classic Chardonnay and they’re a group of Gizzy winemakers keepin’ it real to the style that made the region most famous – big, bold, deliciously buttery style Chardonnays!
Any local winemaker can join the GCC posse as long as they make traditionally barrel fermented, matured Chardys that “must melt even the coldest heart“.
NZ’s leading wine guru and Master of Wine Bob Campbell recently went through a line up of reliably big, buttery Chardonnays sent by the GCC (including this one) – his second favourite wine was Cognoscenti’s Chardonnay made by the Waimata Vineyards.
Bob called it “generously flavoured with golden Queen peach and plenty of nutty oak characters, this wine also has a more modern touch with a hit of struck-flint character…a stylish and appealing wine.”
Some of Aotearoa’s up and coming wine talent played their hand in helping produce this Chardonnay that, quite frankly, you could easily be paying $25 or more for given the bells and whistles treatment it gets! Students at the Tairawhiti campus in Gisborne are taken under the wing of experienced winemaker Brent Laidlaw, who did his thing with wine giants Montana for over 16 years, in helping produce a range of wines under the Polytech’s own Waimata label.
A whole lot of work has gone in to producing this wine – no fancy label, no big marketing budget, just an emphasis on producing bloody good wine not bloody big profits! Hand picked fruit, whole bunch pressed and aged for eight months in oak. The big and buttery style Chardonnay that the old school love – made by the new school!
We give it an A+ for sure – it’s no wonder this wine sells out every year and quickly has Chardy lovers asking when the new vintage is out! Pair with full flavoured or cream based white meat and fish or seafood dishes.
