Terrace Edge Pinot Noir

2014, Waipara New Zealand

Asian Duck Lamb
  • Double Gold & Best Value (China Wine & Spirits Awards), 4 1/2 Stars (Sam Kim, Wine Orbit)
  • End of vintage deal from this family run winery and olive grove in the Waipara Valley
  • "Burgundian" style Pinot with all the fancy treatment and TLC you get from a boutique producer

Terrace Edge are a boutique vineyard and olive grove in the Waipara Valley, owned and operated by the Chapman family. That's husband and wife Bruce and Jill along with one of their sons Pete, a viticulturist, and dear old Nanna who chips in with odd jobs like mending the nets, the important job that helps prevent crop damage before harvest.

A few years back Gourmet Wine Traveller magazine listed these guys as a winery to watch. So we did - and we've been loving what we've been seeing with a stash of accolades and rave reviews, particularly for their Pinot Noir.

They'll tell you they it's made in a "time honoured Burgundian style" with small vat fermentation, use of indigenous yeasts, hand plunging, ten months in French barriques. Wine Orbit's Sam Kim awarded it 4 1/2 Stars and said "A beautifully refined pinot, the complex bouquet shows red/black cherry, mixed spice, floral and subtle truffle characters."

We reckon you're getting a whole lotta Pinot even for the usual $25 you'd fork out for this label. So when we got the call that the winery was cutting a deal to move along the final stocks of their Double Gold & Best Value rated 2014 vintage at a snip under $20 we jumped at it!

Like all tidy Kiwis they're doing their bit to keep NZ beautiful by being part of the "Greening Waipara Project" - giving mother nature in the region a helping hand by restoring vegetation native to the area.

Drink between now and 2021 and if you're wondering what kind of a feed this style of Pinot goes with you can't go wrong with duck, lamb and other game meats - or even a mild Thai curry.
