Penfolds launched their Bin 2 blend back in the 60s, a time when Aussies were slurping their wines in mini-skirts and psychedelic tie-die shirts and they called Shiraz “Hermitage” and Mourvedre “Mataro”. Crazy times!
Much like the fashion the Bin 2 series was ditched in the 70s as a white wine boom hit the Aussie wine market. These days Aussie winemakers love using Mataro (also called Mourvedre or Monastrell) for its blending qualities and Penfolds Bin 2 is going strong over half a century since its debut.
Spicy, savoury Mataro (14%) blended with plush, rich Shiraz (86%) from some of Penfolds best vineyards in the Barossa, McLaren Vale and Langhorne regions.
